Born on September 28, 1947, Sheikh Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. In 1975, her father and most of her family members were brutally assassinated by the military regime that seized power in a coup. Hasina, who was in Germany at the time, survived the massacre and returned to Bangladesh to lead the Awami League, a political party her father founded.Hasina first became Prime Minister in 1996, and since then, she has led Bangladesh through significant political, economic, and social transformations. Under her leadership, the country has achieved impressive progress in reducing poverty, improving access to healthcare, education, and basic services, and promoting gender equality.One of Sheikh Hasina’s most significant achievements as Prime Minister has been her successful management of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite having a large population and limited resources, Bangladesh has been relatively successful in controlling the spread of the virus and keeping the death toll relatively low. Sheikh Hasina’s government quickly imposed a nationwide lockdown, ramped up testing and contact tracing efforts, and provided essential supplies to those in need. The government also implemented a comprehensive stimulus package to support the country’s most vulnerable communities.Sheikh Hasina’s leadership during the pandemic has garnered praise from international leaders, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called her a “true leader of humanity.” Guterres also applauded Bangladesh’s efforts to provide shelter and support to Rohingya refugees who have fled persecution in neighboring Myanmar.
The world seen even in some developed parts of the world the policy of closed borders and push back of refugees, had Bangladesh followed the same script that would have resulted in the death of thousands of persecuted Rohingya people. But Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina saved the lives of thousands of Rohingya people by opening borders and providing them shelter and other humanitarian assistances, out of only her humanitarian compassion.
Under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, Bangladesh has also made significant progress in advancing climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of global warming, with rising sea levels and more frequent natural disasters threatening the livelihoods of millions. But Sheikh Hasina has refused to sit idly by, instead spearheading efforts to build climate-resilient infrastructure, promote renewable energy, and advocate for international cooperation on this urgent issue.
In recognition of her achievements, Sheikh Hasina has been honored with numerous international awards and accolades, including the prestigious United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Award in 2020. The award recognizes her leadership in advancing the SDGs and her efforts to build a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world.
